When should I see a Fertility Specialist and what can I do to boost my chances of conceiving?

Last updated 6 years ago

Family planning usually takes time and considerable preparation. Even after planning out the financial and logistic aspects of raising a child, many couples find they have difficulty conceiving. Fertility doctors are specialists in reproductive medicine who can help you and your partner overcome the hurdles of becoming pregnant.

What is infertility?
Infertility is defined as the inability to become pregnant after one year of frequent, unprotected sex for women under the age of 35. For women over the age of 35, help from an expert should be sought after six months of unprotected sex. It is important to note that infertility may be due to factors in the man, the woman, or both partners, and that it is not always permanent. In fact, some couples may eventually become pregnant without any kind of fertility treatment whatsoever. With treatments like Intra-Uterine Insemination (IUI) and in vitro fertilization (IVF), couples experiencing infertility can increase their chances of conceiving.

How is infertility diagnosed?
A fertility specialist will first assess the overall health of both partners in order to identify certain risk factors of low fertility. This initial assessment usually includes a physical examination along with an interview about the couple’s lifestyle and personal habits. To investigate the potential causes of the couple’s infertility, the woman is tested for her ability to ovulate, and the man is tested for the number, movement, and overall health of his sperm.

What are some of the lifestyle changes that I can make when I’m trying to conceive?
In addition to regular exercise, a healthy diet and maintaining a healthy BMI, there are many simple steps couples can do together to improve fertility.

For Men:

  • Take a multivitamin
  • Avoid excessive heat and pressure
  • Avoid certain prescription medications
  • Limit caffeine consumption
  • Balance your bedroom activity

For Women:

  • Take prenatal vitamins
  • Use an ovulation calendar
  • Avoid chemicals and eat organic foods
  • Get a diabetes screening
  • Avoid excessive or high impact exercise
