What to Expect from Your First Consultation at a Fertility Center

Last updated 6 years ago

One of the first questions many people have when preparing for infertility treatment is what they can expect during their first appointment. While each patient’s experiences may differ slightly, educating yourself on what to expect when visiting your fertility doctor for the first time can help make the process easier.

As with any medical professional, your fertility doctor will start by having you complete a medical history questionnaire outlining your family history, previous medical history, current medications, previous surgeries, and lifestyle factors. It is also important that you provide documentation for any instances of uterine fibroids, endometriosis, pelvic inflammatory disease, pervious miscarriages or ectopic pregnancies, and physical trauma to the reproductive organs to provide your doctor with better insight regarding your specific condition.

Once you have completed your patient medical history paperwork you will meet with your fertility doctor to discuss your symptoms and the underlying reason for your visit. Your fertility doctor will most likely perform a physical examination of the exterior and interior reproductive organs for visual evidence of disease. In some cases, your doctor may recommend a blood test to rule out evidence of more serious medical conditions that are impacting your ability to get pregnant. If the underlying cause of fertility problems is not evident during the physical examination, then your fertility doctor may recommend a number of diagnostic treatments, including a sperm analysis, ovarian function test, and pre-implantation genetic diagnosis screening.

After discussing the diagnostic findings with you and your partner, your fertility doctor will provide you with an overview of your treatment options, including in vitro fertilization treatments, intracytoplasmic sperm injections, intra-uterine insemination, egg donation, sperm donation, and surrogacy.

Here at Fertility Centers of Illinois, our fertility doctors and staff members are devoted to helping you determine which fertility treatment option is best suited to your individual needs. Get the treatment you need to start a family by contacting FCI at (877) 499-8730 today!
